What's a first look and should I do one?

Let’s start off by explaining what a first look is! I’ve had lots of people ask, “what the heck is that” when we are having our phone chats, and that’s totally okay if you don’t know. A first look is a moment between the two of you, when your partner sees you for the first time before the ceremony. There are other types of first looks as well, and I’ll get into that a bit later!

I have to say that first looks are one of my favourite things, for a variety of different reasons, but I understand that it’s not for everyone and definitely don’t push it if that’s not what the couple wants.

On the logical side of things, first looks normally make the timing of your day much easier, especially if you want to be present with your guests for cocktail hour. First looks allow you to put the formal part of your photos with you, bridal party, and sometimes family, ahead of the ceremony. This can make it easier during cocktail hour so you aren’t rushing in a short time frame to get them done.

On a deeper side of things, which is why it makes it one of my favourites, this is a private moment, during a hectic day, for just the two of you. It’s a moment to take to yourselves, reflect on your day, and spend with each other, because trust me, it’s gon get busyyyyy.

But hey, maybe that’s not for you, and you want to go the traditional route, seeing each other at the ceremony, and that’s totally cool if that’s your thing! Because sometimes you get such beautiful reactions like this, that have the whole room in tears.

But you could always still incorporate a first look feel into your day, you could always do a first look with your dad or even bridesmaids. Those can make for some really fun, emotional, photos too!
